With the start of school right around the corner, the United States Fire Administration’s (USFA) messaging for August is “Fire Safety for College Students”. There are 27 colleges and universities in North Dakota! While that is a lot, it means only ~8% of ND departments have a campus in their jurisdiction. What every department in ND does have is students. Whether they will be attending school close to home, across the state, or across the country, you can arm them with the information to be safe in their new environment.
There are several places with resources, including social media messaging, handouts, graphics and videos.

In June 2023, the NFPA published a report called “Fire in Dormitory Type Properties”.
A couple of findings:
- Approximately three out of four fires in these properties began in the kitchen or cooking area. Cooking equipment was involved in nearly 9 out of 10 fires.
- Unattended equipment was the most common factor contributing to the ignition of these fires.
The full report can be accessed here.
