Keep haunted houses horrifyingly safe

Since Halloween is just around the corner, let’s discuss Haunted Houses!  Since haunted houses are often arranged to disorient, obscure vision, and frighten occupants, it is no wonder that numerous additional fire safety items in the code should be addressed. Some of the more common fire and life safety issues that should be considered are as follows: 

Fire Protection and Life Safety Systems – Chapter 9

• Is the building equipped with an automatic sprinkler system? Is the system properly maintained and in operable condition?  
• Is the building equipped with a fire alarm and detection system? Is the system properly maintained and in operable condition? 
• Make sure that all visual, audible, and initiating devices are unobstructed and unobscured.  

Means of Egress and Exit/Evacuation – Chapter 10

• Are exit signs illuminated?
• Is emergency lighting provided to illuminate the exit in the event of a power outage or emergency? 
• Are exit doors readily visible and distinguishable as exit doors?
• Are exits and exit accessways accessible and clear of obstructions?  
• Can patrons locate an exit from any location within the structure, and can patrons exit safely to a public way? (Street, Parking Lot) 

Interior Finish, Decorative Materials and Furnishings – Chapter 8

• Curtains, draperies, fabric hangings and other similar combustible decorative materials suspended from walls or ceilings need to be in accordance with NFPA 286, ASTM E84 or UL 723.
• Furnishings or other objects cannot be placed to obstruct the access or visibility of exits. 

Emergency Planning and Preparedness – Chapter 4

• Is an approved fire and safety evacuation plan in place? 
• In the event of an emergency, are employees/volunteers trained on the evacuation procedures and how to notify others or call for assistance?
