According to the US Fire Administration (USFA) cooking fires were the leading cause of residential building fires in 2021 with 170,000 reported nationally. The next leading cause was heating fires at 32,200. In North Dakota the numbers tell the same story. In 2021, there were 188 cooking fires, with the next leading cause being “other unintentional, careless,” having 125.
